MusiciansSwissKnife tone generatorMusicians’ Swiss Knife is a free utility application for the N97 provided by bitsforfree.eu. As the name implies, it features a few essential tools for the mobile musician!

Features

The aplication has 3 main features. It includes a metronome, a BPM (beats per minute) counter and a tone generator which can be used for tuning an instrument. The necessary settings for each feature are included, and you can also adjust the volume within the application (although it doesn’t support the dedicated keys on the side of the phone for doing so).

Is it in tune?

Yes! The tone generator is a must have if you play an instrument that needs tuning since this means you won’t have to carry an external tuner with you or rely on other ways to tune it. Just start the application, select your note and you will be done faster than you would have been with a traditional tuner. You can even select the instrument for the tones, but since they are all MIDI like in quality, only the default piano sounds nice to my ears. It’s useful however that you can select cello or organ which will play the selected note for as long as you like (unlike the piano where the tone naturally rings out after a while).

The metronome is also a nice utility for a jam when you want everyone to keep in synch! It lets you adjust both tempo and how the clicks should play. I’m not quite sure what to use the BMP Counter for, but I guess I’m not musical enough…

Overall the sound quality on the N97 is surprisingly good and loud and works just fine for this kind of utility.

Summary

Pros

  • Works great!
  • Replaces 2 traditional physical tools

Cons

  • Only the piano sounds good in the tone generator
