Hardware infoPhoneInfo is a system information reporting tool for the N97 provided by NewLC. It displays useful information about the device specific codes and about the hardware on the device .

Features

The application displays the information in plain text. It uses typical Symbian OS screens that resembles the settings pages. The information included is divided into four different tabs. The ”General” tab displays information about device codes such as IMEI, firmware version and WLAN MAC. The ”Hardware” tab displays information about available RAM, screen and processor. The “Drives” tab displays information about (you guessed it!) the system drives. The final tab is called “Fonts” and displays the installed fonts on the system as well as samples of each font.

Does it have all the info I need?

Simply – no! While it does include all the basic information that you would expect, I would have expected more. I mean, since all the application consists of is text, it could have offered more… Well, hm, text! And while the information on each tab may be logical in theory, in reality what I want to see on the first screen as soon as I start an application like this is free RAM, IMEI and drive space. To get that information here, I have to switch between three different tabs! One piece of included information that I really like though is the uptime of the device. Nice!

Although this kind of application is all about data, I must also confess that some graphics would have been nice, I’ve seen enough of standard Symbian menus to last me a lifetime…

Some of the information – processor type, screen resolution and so on – doesn’t really seem necessary. Most N97 users will already know this, and if not, a simple web search will do the trick. As a comparison tool with other devices this might be useful, though.

Summary

Pros

  • Free
  • The expected info is there
  • Shows uptime!

Cons

  • Dull user interface
  • Information is not organized in a logical way

It contains the information you expect, but there are better alternatives out there.
