App Review: Playlist DJ

Playlist DJ 05Playlist DJ is a free music utility for the N97 and other S60v5 devices provided by Syntonetic. It promises to create exciting playlists from your music collection depending on your current mood. Does it have the tools to deliver?

Features

The app features four different mood meters that you can adjust. They are happy, love, anger and tempo. Depending on your choices, different type of songs will be included in the generated playlists. The app also analyzes the songs in your music collection. Most of the time, songs can be classified from results previously saved online, but if not a process called deep profiling occurs. This process analyzes the actual song content instead of relying on a previous result.

The generated playlists can of course be played and saved. There is also a feature to generate a playlist with songs reminiscent of a song currently playing.

Can it create a better playlist than me?

Hm, no I don’t think so, but it can definitely do it faster! And if you have a large music collection on your phone like I do, it’s fascinating to see the mix of songs in the generated playlists. That said, the app doesn’t really deliver enough yet. It’s fun, but improvements are needed to make it a vital purchase in the future. (It’s free until October 31 but will be commercial after that.)

The deep profiling used when the app can’t recognize a song takes forever, and some of the selections are questionable at best. As an example, when I set the meters for happy and love at the top and the two other at the bottom I got Cop of Coffee with Garbage in my resulting playlist. If you haven’t heard the song, it’s a slow ballad with the chorus stating “it took a cup of coffee, to prove that you don’t love me”. Happy love song, eh?

It’s not all bad. The app does work on many occasions, and it’s perfectly capable of creating a party playlist full of happy songs (assuming you have a few happy songs on your phone of course!). I also think it’s a fascinating technology that will be interesting to follow. I wouldn’t be surprised if it’s a common feature on all music oriented phones this time next year…

Ok, this is a bit crazy. How can you not list those cons when it comes to usability??? I am talking about not being able to use equilizers, stereo widening and lodness settings!!! I thought i am going to love this app, but without these setting i am not going to use it at all:)
