Best N97/S60v5 Applications! Day 3: TuneWiki
So, pretty much every time I’m listening to music I tend to sing along (who doesn’t?) but isn’t it REALLY annoying when you forget the lyrics? Well that’s where TuneWiki comes into play. This application is simply AWESOME!
It’s great, pick a song and it will grab the lyrics from the internet within seconds so you can sing along and embarrass yourself on the train XD
Before I found this application I had to find my lyrics on google, which isn’t so much of a chore but it does take considerably longer to get them than with TuneWiki.
According to my good friend Salman, “TuneWiki was first started as an underground ‘jailbreak’ application for the iPhone in 2008″. You can see from this that it must have something about it for the developers to port it to other OSes such as Symbian.
Any way, enough with the intro… On with the features I hear you shout! Well here they are;
- Music Library – Like the built-in music player, there is a full music library built on your collection including Artist, Album, Song and Playlist groupings. There is full kinetic scrolling in the menus and an iPhone-esque letter search down the right (although rather fiddly)
- Internet Radio – Shoutcast radio on your phone
With an easy shoutcast search you shouldn’t be without music where ever you are. - Music Video Library – With this you can search YouTube for music videos, it even has an artist/song search.
- Community – Here you can search for song lyrics without playing the song, it even has a feature to search a phrase from a song to possibly find the name of that song you love. There are also Music Maps which show you what music is being played in your area or other selectable areas. Furthermore, there is a TuneWiki Top 50 section, a TuneWiki Playlists area and Following/Followers screens (I assume like Twitter but I haven’t tried it).
Although I quite liked the idea of having intergrated YouTube searching I found this a tad upsetting;
The video feature is a hit-and-miss implementation in TuneWiki. Videos are searched through the YouTube client that is integrated in TuneWiki or they can be searched by hitting the video button while playing a song. For most of the popular songs, lyrics are also displayed. However, the video quality suffers and most of the videos occupy only a fraction of the screen real estate. That, above all, siphons all the fun out of watching videos and renders the Video feature useless.
- Salman Khan
Other disappointments are that there are no equaliser settings and no song search capabilities
TuneWiki can operate without going online but as you can see, without it’s main feature (instant lyrics), it doesn’t really have anything more than the built in media player.
At the end of the day, if you need to get some lyrics when listening to a song on your phone then this is the way forward! It’s on the Ovi Store and it’s FREE so check it out… NOW!
