3) Opera Mini –The browsers which comes with Nokia S60v5 phones are quite good but they lack in many features like multiple tab support, crashes randomly etc. But Opera Mini – one of the most popular Mobile phone web browser comes in.
4) Handy Taskman – The inbuilt task manager of S60 smartphones is quite limited.
Fresh on the heels of the Nokia N97 and N97 Mini, Nokia have now announced the Nokia N900. Replacing the N810 Internet Tablet, the N900 is a curious beast in that it’s more smartphone than Internet Tablet – you can even make phone calls on it!

This puts it smack bang in the middle of the smartphone market, where it competes directly with the, erm…Nokia N97! So just what does the N900 offer that the N97 doesn’t (and vice versa!). And more importantly, is it worth buying?

Nokia N900 Overview

Check Out This N900 Overview Video. Whatch here:

www.youtube.com/watch?v=kYnx0PUX7Do

The Nokia N900 is a big beast, and in many respects, reminds of my trusty old Nokia E90.

It’s dimension are 4.4? x 2.3? x 0.7?, which is big for a phone, but only as big as an HTC TouchPro 2. And when you think that the N900 is being pitched as an Internet Tablet, it’s actually kind of small.

One thing that isn’t in doubt is the N900’s looks. It’s black, it’s sleek, it’s a touchscreen smartphone, but with a slide-out QWERTY keyboard that looks more like the E90’s than than the N97’s . Better still, with an 800 x 480 screen, it looks like it really means business.

Which it does – just check out this list of features:

32GB of storage

5 megapixel camera with Carl Zeiss optics

Dual-LED Flash

800 x 480 video recording

A-GPS with Ovi Maps

10Mbps download, 2Mbps upload HSDPA for super-fast browsing

Quad-band GSM

54Mbps data transfer over Wi-Fi

600MHz ARM Cortex-A8 processor

1GB application memory

OpenGLES 2.0 3D graphics acceleration

Superb Web browser with built-in support for Adobe Flash 9.4

Maemo 5 operating system

TV-Out

Media player supporting the following formats and codecs: mp4, .avi, .wmv, .3gp, H.264, MPEG-4, Xvid, WMV, H.263

Music formats supported include .wav, .mp3, .AAC, .eAAC, .wma, .m4a

FM Radio

Wow! That’s a huge list of features. But look a little closer, and you’ll see it’s not that different to the N97. So how do the two differ, and which one should you buy?

Comparing the Nokia N900 with the N97

At first glance, the N900 and N97 share many of the same features. For example the 5 megapixel camera, A-GPS, 32GB storage, HSDPA and Wi-Fi, all are the same on both phones, and indeed, have been the same specs on most N-Series phones since the Nokia N95 launched back in 2007.

Where the two differ significantly, though, is the operating systems underpinning each phone, and the vision that Nokia has for them.

Nokia N97 – a phone first and foremost

After the Review of Nokia N97 it’s clear that it’s been developed as a phone first and foremost.

It still uses the old Symbian operating system that Nokia have been using on their N-Series phones for some time now, but this is really starting to show its age. The N97 lets you browse the Web, it has a touchscreen, it comes with social media apps such as Facebook, but these all feel somewhat tacked on as an after-thought.

There’s no cohesion to the different features, and the overall experience is rather slow and discordant (although Nokia have taken significant steps to addressing this in a new firmware update).

Nokia N900 – a mobile desktop device

In stark contrast, the N900 has been designed to bring a desktop experience to the mobile phone, with the Internet at its core right from the start, rather than tacked onto a phone platform, as seems the case with the N97.

To this end, Nokia have used their brand new Maemo 5 operating system with the N900. Maemo 5 is based on Linux, and with the use of a super-fast 600MHz ARM processor, 1GB of application RAM and OpenGL 3D graphics acceleration, the result is a super-slick smartphone that has the potential to run rings round the N97, if not the entire competition!

With such sophisticated underpinnings, the N900 can multi-task many applications simulatneously without any noticeable slowing down. Its touchscreen user interface is superbly responsive, and the animations, transitions and general user interface whizziness react without any slowing down or hesitation.

Better still, with its huge high resolution screen, you can pack a lot of information on the screen and still see it clearly.

The overall feel is one of fluidity – it’s a phone that you can really use in an efficient, productive way that also looks supremely good.

Web browsing is also superb, with an iPhone-esque browser that you can zoom in and out on and move around with the flick of a finger. More impressively, Adobe Flash is supported, and you can watch YouTube videos directly inside the browser, just as you can with a desktop browser.

This really is a desktop in a mobile device!

Should you buy the N97 or the N900

All this leads to one interesting question: should you buy the Nokia N97 or the N900? Both have similar features and a similar form factor. Both, alarmingly, seem to be competing with each other! In an already confused smartphone marketplace, having yet another option to go for only makes the decision harder!

If you’re the type of person who wants a great Web browsing experience in a smartphone that can better most of those on the market, both in terms of features and power, then go for the Nokia N900 (although be warned – it’ll cost 500 Euros!)
If, on the other hand, you’re the type of person who prefers a slimmer phone that has great features, then, well…no, I still can’t recommend the N97!

To be fair, the N97 has been given a significant boost from Nokia in the form of a new fimrware update that puts right many of its failings. But even with that, the N900 is simply leagues ahead of it in every way. So go for the N900. If you want a slimmer smaller phone, don’t buy a smartphone!

Okay, so there is a big craze going on at the moment with smartphone applications… Especially since the release of Apple’s App Store. It has even prompted Nokia to release the Ovi Store to make it easier for it’s users to download and install applications on their phone.

So, I hear you ask… “What good apps are there for the N97?” Well, I’m here to tell you about a few that I find are a must for your Nokia.

First up, Handy Taskman by Epocware;
This great piece of software is, in my opinion, the best task manager replacement for Symbian. It’s simply awesome. Features include;

Close all – Need to free some RAM? Simply select Close all from the options menu and all closable apps will be shut down, freeing up that crucial RAM.

Kill app – App frozen? Stuck and eating RAM/Battery life? Simply select it in Handy Taskman and select Kill. Done.

Integration with the OS – Hold down the Menu button to bring up Handy Taskman instead of the usual inbuilt task manager. It couldn’t be simpler.

Device info – The main screen of this application will show you important device information such as available free RAM and free data storage space.

Favourites – Have some apps that you run ALL THE TIME? Then add them to the favourites menu and whalah! It’s easy to access those applications when speed is of the essence.

There is a free trial of this application available over at http://www.epocware.com/ so you can give it a try before you buy but I’m sure you’ll agree that this software is easily worth the money!

Keep checking back for more news on the top applications for your N97/S60v5 based device. Also if you have any suggestions on what you think are the best apps for the Nokia N97 then drop me a comment!

Apart from being a good business phone, the Nokia N97 is also a superb multimedia phone. Plus, with 32GB worth of in-built storage (expandable upto 48GB), there can be a LOT of multimedia that can be put on this device. The audio quality on the N97 is excellent and on par with many of the personal MP3 players. The music player also has support for equalizers, from which you can use the factory presets or if you’re an audiophile you can create your own preset. Though the inclusion of equalizers is not a surprise at all, it does signal relief to avid music listeners who listen to music according to their frequency levels. For example, being a huge hip-hop fan, I cannot listen to music in anything but the low-frequency region of the frequency response curve and have to switch to ‘Bass Booster’ on the equalizer!

Boost your Bass!

However, with storage expandable up to 48GB, it gets a bit drab just listening to music. As a proud owner of an N97 which boasts a bright screen that supports HD videos in its native resolution of 640X360 you probably realized it to be a good idea to add those high def music videos on board. Now, you can have your songs come to life and besides, this helps in filling your vacant space in the storage department.

Though, after watching the music videos, I would not feel fully satisfied. No, it wasn’t the quality of the video or problems with playback; it was just my wholesome addiction to bass. Now, I know there aren’t any phones –that I know of at least- that add equalizer support for videos, so it would be extra hard to find a solution to this. However, while randomly multi-tasking between a music video and a song, I had my penicillin moment! I will spare you the rest and show you how to trick the N97 into applying equalizer settings. Here’s how:

Open the video player and open the video of your choice!

Pause that video and open the music player.

Play any song from your music player and make sure the equalizer is applied while playing.

Pause the song and switch back to the video player.

Resume the video and the equalizers present in the music player will be applied to the current video!

Enjoy your videos with equalizer!

In words, this looks like a lot, but once you get the hang of it, you’ll enjoy your videos more than ever! It might be a little mult-tasking loophole that Symbian has overlooked, but it provides us with something a lot of other phones can’t: audio equalizers in videos!

I hope this has enhanced your video watching experience and please chime in about your experience with this.

-Salman

Hello all for another review on another great app. Today I’m going to talk about the eBuddy app for Symbian.

Yes yes, there are others such as Nimbuzz and Fring that offer much more functionality such as voice calling and video calling over Skype etc but unfortunately I can’t use these without Wifi – Yes that’s right, I’m with T-Mobile UK which unfortunately block the ports that these apps need.

The only two IM apps I can use are eBuddy and Palringo which are both great but I find that eBuddy just beats Palringo. Both these apps are free from their respective websites so get on down there and check them out, it can’t do any harm (links at the bottom)

With eBuddy you’ll need an eBuddy ID, it’s easy to register, and this ID will hold all the information for all your IM Services. eBuddy allows you to chat through MSN, Facebook, ICQ, AIM, GTalk etc. You can add as many accounts as you require.

A nice feature that I like is “Recent chats” which will tell you all the contacts you often speak to through your IM services. This is a great help when trying to find a certain contact, it’s a bit like a favourites system. You can set your display name, display picture, personal message and you can also have notification sounds/vibration alerts for incoming messages which is great if you plan to leave the app running in the background.

You can do all the usual things such as Nudge and send emoticons to your contacts through the MSN protocol. Another great thing is that there are no in-chat advertisements which are evident in some other Instant Messaging apps out there.

If you would like a review on a certain application, be it free or premium software, then just leave me a comment and I’ll see if I can sort something out.

Thanks for reading and like always, check it out you can’t go wrong for free! Also, remember that if you’re with someone like T-Mobile that block certain required ports for other IM apps then eBuddy or Palringo are perfect!

You can find eBuddy @ http://www.ebuddy.com/mobilebeta/index.php (PC) / http://get.ebuddy.com (Mobile)

- or -

You can find Palringo @ http://www.palringo.com/

Ever wanted to watch some TV on a train, LIVE? Okay, we’ve got iPlayer for recorded shows (and some Live shows) but we can’t use this over a 3G network but this technique is available over any network fast enough to run it.

You may have heard of this website, but even if you have then you might not know that you can view it on an N97. TVCatchup.com is the website I’m talking about of course – this website streams live UK freeview TV channels over the internet to its (free) registered members. Yes, unfortunately this means that you won’t be able to watch it unless you’re in the UK (Proxy anyone? ).

TVCatchup does not officially support Symbian nor does a Vanilla (out-of-the-box) Symbian phone support it. To watch TV on this site you need to get Skyfire. Now Skyfire is a nice nifty browser that attempts to show all websites in full desktop view glory and it does, most of the time. It’s also very fast at loading pages, much like Opera Mini/Mobile, so I’d recommend installing it even if you see no use at the moment.

With Skyfire you can log into your TVCatchup account and start watching, make sure that if you get redirected to the iPhone version then go back to the homepage and start again or else nothing will work, not even login.

Oh, another thing… Skyfire tends to munch away at a lot of RAM so check out Salman’s post on how to free up as much RAM as possible. I tried to take some screen shots but ScreenSnap kept closing down due to low RAM, this gives you an idea of how much Skyfire uses.

Any way, Let me know how you get on by dropping me a comment below. Thanks.

- Aden Beckitt

PS. I recommend you have an unlimited, or very generous, data plan for doing this over 3G.

Have you ever have had your beloved Nokia N97 start to act up and not listen to your commands as quickly as you would like? If you’ve experienced these slow-downs in your phone, then rest assured, you are not alone and there are ways to boost the N97’s energy so it can behave like the premium flagship phone Nokia intends it to be. Though Nokia has released a firmware update that nicely patches up the initial problems these issues still arise due to the low hardware restrictions on the N97. First, we will look at what causes these problems, and then we’ll look at a couple of applications that can solve these problems.

As most of you know the Nokia N97 operates on the Symbian OS and while this is one of the simplest and cleanest operating system, it has some quirks that the Symbian Foundation has failed to address. However, it seems that Symbian has attended to these problems for their future iterations: the Symbian^3 and Symbian^4. Getting back to the S60 operating system, when you open a program it will open up background processes for so the program becomes fully functional. However, when the program is closed it doesn’t fully shut itself off and leaves behind ‘traces’ of itself so that it may load up faster the next time the user opens that certain program. Such programs include: the menu system, messaging, contacts, clock, logs, etc. The N97 also automatically starts these programs in the background when a phone is booted up. Ending these programs will benefit your N97 by making it run smoother, make it less crash-prone (especially while using a demanding app like the internet browser), and preserving battery life. We will show you ways to fully terminate these programs.

Here is how you can maximize performance on your phone:

You can restart your phone. This is the simplest way to release all the memory and boost your phone’s performance. However, some shortcuts in life –especially this one- should be avoided as much as possible. Symbian automatically starts the above stated applications in the background and you’ll be back to ground zero as soon as you know it. Also, restarting the phone does no good to your battery life as the startup drains a lot of juice out of the poor thing.

Download Handy Taskman. This software by Epocware/Paragon Software comes in real handy (pun definitely intended) in closing those applications running in the background. This serves as a much more power powerful task manager than Symbian’s skeletal Show/Exit task manager. Just click on Optionsà Close All and poof watch the RAM come back from those unused background tasks! Other goodies such as bookmarking fav. Applications is also present. You can evaluate the software for 14 days and buy it ($14.95) after that period. The link is provided below.

See what Symbian doesn't want to show you!

Download RAMblow. This is a neat new program by CellPhoneSoft. It not only terminates all the unused background applications, but also the unused cached tasks – like the menu tasks. Other features include the MemoryBoost option and an option to schedule automatic clean-ups. You will definitely see a lot of free ram after running this simple application. This application is also available for an evaluation basis of 14 days. If the price of Handy Taskman will set you off, this is an excellent alternative. You may buy it for $4.95. The link is provided below.

Kill RAM, Rambo style!

Restart the phone when before charging and run these applications. We know this maybe contradicting the first point, but you’ll soon see the logic in this. Restart your phone before you put it on charge (preferably at night) so you won’t have to worry about battery problems. Once the phone has restarted wait a couple of minutes and then either use RAMblow or Handy Taskman to terminate all the automatic programs that start up (ie, messaging, clock, etc.). Now, you shall have free RAM of no less than 45-55MB on your N97 and this will let your phone run smoother throughout the day!

I hope this was beneficial to you and hopefully your Nokia N97 will be a crash-free device for the rest of its duration with you!

The links for the two programs:

Handy Taskman (Free-to-try, $14.95 afterwards): Website

RAMblow (Free-to-try, $4.95 aftwerwards): Website

*There is also a free alternative called JBTaskman, but it is not recommended because you will have to know exactly what you are doing when using this application. The link, to download it at your own will, is here.

As I’ve stated before, I have a feeling the upcoming firmware update will change the landscape for the N97 and make it more generally accepted. Still, many users – including myself – have been using the phone for 3 months or more now, so it’s definitely time to sum up how it’s been treating us until now.

Don’t hesitate to comment with your own opinions and experiences!

The good stuff

The home screen and the home screen widgets for Facebook, e-mail and more. It’s really changed the way I use my phone!

I can’t believe it’s only been 3 months since I switched from using my old N95, it feels and looks really ancient now…

32 GB of internal storage!

The touch screen. Not as good as iPhone (yet!) and why the heck wasn’t full support for kinetic scrolling included from the beginning? Still, once you’re used to it you don’t want to go back…

The not so good stuff…

USB connections are still unstable and slow. Although working much better since the last firmware update, still not nearly good enough and a bit embarrassing for a flagship device to have this kind of problem!

Camera software does a poor job on many occassions. There’s no doubt the N97 is capable of taking stunning pictures, but too often the software seems to get in the way. Camera software is one of the areas where Nokia have always been good at improving quality with firmware updates, so there’s definitely hope for the feature here.

Free memory and performance. 256 MB anyone?! Or at least support for virtual memory… And sad to say, too often the N97 lags in different areas or just behaves unresponsive. Since the phone works beautifully most of the time, let’s hope the performance issue are mostly software related and that virtual memory will indeed be supported in the future (although it doesn’t look like it…).

Overall, I definitely don’t regret going for the N97, and there’s no model available on the market (at least not yet…) that I would rather have. Still, it’s vital that Nokia gets the upcoming firmware update right. All 3 of my bad points above should be more or less taken care of.

Well, maybe not quite, but what it actually can do is add an application launcher to the N97 that has exactly the same look and the same functions as the home screen of an iPhone. There’s no question that the first five minutes of running this application is hilarious – I mean come on, it’s the iPhone on my N97 for god’s sake! – but let’s have a look at how it performs after that. Is it really a useful application?

First things first – does it actually feel like an iPhone when I touch it?

No, it doesn’t! It still feels very much like the good old N97. It really does look like an iPhone though, as you can see.

The user interface is fast and works relatively well, although scrolling can be a bit awkard at times. After playing around for a while though, I actually start to miss the N97:s native home screen. I’ve got it setup just like I want it you know, and I can access everything I normally use in a second… Running the iPhone UI just isn’t the same when it’s not an iPhone, after all.

The application doesn’t seem to demand a lot of memory when running, but if you switch to another application and leave myPhone in the background there’s a distinct feeling that the phone is not running as smoothly as it ought to be. Most of the time it’s no big problem, but a few times during my tests the entire phone seemed to stop responding until the MyPhone application was closed. I especially noticed this during USB file transfers which seems a bit odd… The technology behind the application is Flash, and probably these issues have more to do with Flash than with myPhone. Does that make it any less annoying, though? You know it doesn’t…

What else can it do?

MyPhone actually adds a few nice features not present on the N97. A competent RSS reader is the highlight, it also has its own weather application and an iPhone like implementation of SMS that can be used instead of the native application (the actual messages is seen by both applications of course). Most of the time though, MyPhone is just a launcher for the normal applications on the phone. Contacts, Maps, Music Player and so on. I find it a bit confusing to be be thrown back and forward between the iPhone UI and the Symbian UI, and after a while, once again I start longing for my normal N97 home screen…

It’s worth noting that MyPhone also has a ton of settings for how it will operate, so if you really want the iPhone UI on your N97, you really can’t have any complaints about the features.

So… Don’t you just love it?

No, I don’t! I love my N97 the way it is, that’s why I bought it in the first place! Apart from some issues with Flash though, this is a very competent application and considering the features the price of $12.99 is very reasonable. So if you’re up for it, I can actually recommend it.

Summary

Pros

It is the iPhone!

Nice features

Price is right

It’s makes you realize how good the N97 really is, without iPhone!

Cons

Hm, it is the iPhone…

Some lagging and bad performance

Switching between MyPhone and native N97 is sometimes confusing

So – If you’ve always wanted the iPhone UI on your N97, this is probably as close as you’re gonna get! Buy from this link the application /or have a trial.

My first thought was Epocware , who keep coming up with really good applications, my all time favourite is Handy Taskman, though I don’t recommend it if you own a N97 or the 5800. On my next post I will give you my personal reasons. Let’s have a look at the Handy RSS.

Anyway, I visited the site and decided to download an application called Handy RSS. I have been thinking of trialling this for a while now and I made my decision couple of weeks back. It will cost you $9.99 if you decide to buy it, but like all others it comes with a trial period of 14 days.

My first concerned was, how easy would it be to ad feeds, because if you are like me and have 100 plus feeds, the last thing on your mind will be to manually ad them. My worst fears were realised on the Handy RSS application. After 5 feeds, my thumb was already hurting. Here comes the stylus. In case you’re wondering there is an option to import feeds but the help section is not very clear on how you can achieve this.

Once you’ve added a few of them you can start to enjoy the application. Updating the feeds is quite fast on Wi-Fi or if you happen to be on a 3g area. If you go to settings you will find that you can keep your feeds for up to 3 months. You can update your feeds at every start up and you can choose to mark your feeds as read manually or automatically. If you are looking for something in particular and happened to know the day there is a feature called Go to Date”.

All in all it’s not a bad application and for 10 bucks you can’t really expect much. I would have liked if it came with a feed search option and then it would be worth every penny. Looks like my trial is over.

What application do you use for your feeds addiction? Is the built in feed app enough if you own a Nokia N97, if you own a Nokia 5800 which one do you use? Also, please, make sure that you subcribe our RSS feeds.
